He said he'd top off the tank with 87. Good or bad Idea? He stalled it on his way out BTW.
I wont have my license for a week (assuming I pass (I will)) and Im trying to save my money. My brother has his license and is manning the bike service dept at CU boulder, so he has cash.

You've made a grave mistake.
Also, he's going to fill it with regular? Really? None of my cars get that crap....

I only put regular in mine. It's an early 90's V6, it isn't really hurting anything. Unless you need that extra 3 hp...

91 is super premium here. Its because of the altitude I believe

Personally I wouldn't let my brother or friends drive my car. I don't trust many people with it. It's so hard for me to hand over the keys if I'm getting new tires or an oil change. And knowing my friends, they would manage to destroy the car. With the way they treat their cars I would be replacing tires and a clutch.
But as long as your brother doesn't drive like an idiot, it'll be fine. I'm just way over protective. He should hopefully get used to your clutch quickly. And if he's getting gas for you it's even better!

I have never seen 85... 87 is regular to me. Either way, it probably isn't going to hurt anything. I would run it if it saved me a bit. It's not like it's a state of the art, complex, fragile injection system. It's a Ranger. My cousin nearly ran his out of oil after pushing 30k between oil changes. It's still running strong at nearly 400k miles.

Alright, it snowed for a entire 10 seconds at one point here this afternoon, I was pissed because I was out in the wind already replacing my throttle return spring on the Yota...but I fixed it :D now it stopped sticking partially open, lol.

To be fair, he bought it with 220k from the original owner and the thing looked brand new. It had one dent, and it was the size of a dime. The interior was also spotless. It is literally none of that now.

Ive seen my brother drive it, hes just as bad with a manual as I am. And its not like I could drive it anytime this week. So at least its getting driven. I dont trust his auto driving habits, but hes too out of his element with a manual to do anything crazy. At this point I trust him, once he becomes more capable with a stick that opinion may change.

Well, to value your motor, try like, 89 and up. I don't care about the debate of whether it's better mileage or not, its a cleaner burn in the cylinder.
I have never seen a pump offer any less than 87....what a ripoff.

Its hard to find 89 here. Its mostly 85, 87 and 91. And Im not paying 91 prices when 87 is below $3 a gallon

Well, then the only thing you have to worry about is the clutch! Which is kind of an expensive thing to worry about... Is it a heavy clutch? I've been told trucks tend to have heavy clutches. Then again, the Ranger is a light truck so that may be different.

No it's not. Octane the measurement of resistance to detonation - that is, how easy it ignites. The higher the octane rating, it is literally harder to ignite and burn, meaning that if the characteristics of your engine do not require it, you are actually costing yourself efficiency by running it. This translates to less power and less mileage for any given amount of fuel, and has absolutely nothing to do with "clean" burning.
The difference between gasoline brands and the only difference between them is the additives and detergents. That still doesn't make it burn any "cleaner" but can make the fuel act as a solvent of sorts and not build up behind the combustion chamber as much (the usual intake valve comparisons you see on pumps), and is completely unrelated to octane and has nothing to do with efficiency.

i seriously doubt you'll get engine knock from a low ass compression ranger motor

wabbalosthiskey is right. At the 5-6k foot elevation mark 87 is plenty for just about everything.

I wouldn't worry about it. I used to run 85 in things that made more power with higher tech than your ranger when I lived in Wyoming. Never had a problem.

A whole new clutch, that's great. Saves you quite a bit of money. Just remember, if that new clutch hasn't been broken in yet (500 miles of easy driving) then you need to be careful with it.
I didn't think that clutch would be so heavy. But it's something you get used to.

To be honest, you're only saving at most a dollar per tankful running regular over premium. But if your truck runs well on whatever you're putting in it, then hey, more power to you!

Whats the issue with the injectors? My understanding is that at higher altitudes, the lower octane is used as knock becomes less likely due to the lower air pressure.

The only time 85 won't be just perfectly fine in the truck is our atrocious winter blends here. You'll notice a bit of knock and ping, that's when you switch up to mid (87). FUN FACT: Here at elevation, 85 octane performs the same as 87 octane down at sea level. Vehicles made to run on 87 (regular) octane (check your manual! It's right there ) drink 85 here.
There is absolutely not one single reason why you should ever need to put premium (89-91) in that truck, at least factory spec. If you add a turbo or super, sure, but as it sits? 85 all day long.
Except right now
Because winter blend has come
Use 87

At elevation, our 85 is others' 87. That truck is made to run on regular octane gas and will do just fine with it.

We're over a mile in altitude, 85 and 91 make virtually zero difference aside from the size of the hole in our wallets.

Yup:
